Netflix – Qwikster

The CEO of Netflix apologized as to why he separated Netflix into two separate divisons. New division, Qwikster will be the DVD rental business while Netflix is streaming only. Reed Hastings, the CEO is dealing with the negative reaction, people are angry and confused.

A guy that worked for Netflix  wil nowl be working into the new company. It’s been like this forever but now it’s too the public. Two accounts, two different divisions. If you need to change anything, it’s all done separatly. Let’s say you are subscribed to both, and you need to change some of your information then you will need to do it with both.

Netflix wants to go streaming only! The problem is, all movies aren’t streamed. Some of the movies are DVD only.

They don’t want to kill the DVD business , they want to move more people over to streaming.

On the Qwikster side of things, do you think this will this idea take off? How will they promote? Will they have Kiosks, other promotional ideas? DVD express, Redbox, and others are already in this business and how is Qwikster going to compete as now, to the public, they are someone new and they don’t even have Netflix’s name to back them. No one knows really who they are.

Qwikster has video games also , at a premium like blu-ray. Pay extra for unlimited video game rentals. None of this is final so we are still waiting for details about this.

Redbox, Qwikster will die, in my opinion, they are at thier peak now. DVD business needs to get out of the way of the growing streaming business. Netflix doesn’t want to get rid of it completely though.

you might wonder who uses DVD rentals. DVD still has better quality audio and video. That is also the same with Blu-ray. They also are great if you don’t have a lot of available bandwidth.

The reactions were terrible.Netflix said they messed up. People say what they did made the company worse.

Hasting’s says they have some enhanced content coming to streaming in the near future. They need to ‘wow the customer’s and get them back on their side. We need more content on Netflix Streaming for sure.

What are your thoughts? Will you continue to use Netflix? If so, DVD or streaming? Leave your comments below.

NASA Final Shuttle Launch – Atlantis

Shuttle Atlantis blasted off in a very historic launch today despite concerns about the weather and a last-minute problem that was quickly solved. The shuttle took off just behind schedule at 11:29 EST. It is the last time a shuttle will travel to space before this program is retired.

“The space shuttle spreads its wings one final time for the start of a sentimental journey into history,” said a NASA observer from the Kennedy Space Center as the shuttle blasted off smoothly.

This program started in 1981 with the launch of Columbia. Since that time, 135 shuttle missions have been launched. Atlantis itself will have flown 35 missions by the time it heads into retirement. The shuttle holds a year’s worth of supplies for the International Space Station. When going up, it weighed about 8,000 pounds.

Overall, this was a very succesful launch and we are all glad. NASA’s final space shuttle mission.

Facebook Video Calling Announcement for July 2011

In a live announcement from Facebook’s HQ in Palo Alto, Facebook CEO Mark  Zuckerberg shows us a new video chat system that combines Skype software with  Facebook’s social infrastructure.

This function is made to be very simple and functions as an app built into  Facebook. You will be able to click a small button on your friend’s chat window ,  you both install a small 500kb plugin and you’ll be video calling in no time.

Zuckerberg also announced two other new features.  One is a group chat feature  that will allow for ad hoc chats between groups of friends. The other new feature  is a new layout that will put a separate bar of friends (both online and  offline)on the side of browser.

All the features are aimed at increasing interaction between friends on Facebook.  Zuckerberg highlighted this as a key goal for his site expansion.750 million  users and counting.

I have personally tested out the video calling feature and the new sidebar. Both  looks very promising. I can’t wait until I can try them out some more.

Are Facebook’s new features as ‘awesome’ as they were said to be? I am sort of  disappointed that group calling isn’t available yet similar to Google+’s  ‘Hangout’ feature which is currently in the beta stage, invite only.

This is going to help a lot of people though, that is for sure. Like I said,  Facebook created this with simplicity in mind. This is going to be a very nice  feature for people who don’t know a lot about computers, to use. No additional off  site programs. No additional set-up, etc. It is all right there, within your own  web browser.

Leave your comments. Let us know what you think about this new service and if you are going to use it.

Time For New Hardware? My Apple Predictions for June 15th 2011

I wanted to quickly give my thoughts and predictions on Apple and what I think might be released or announced tomorrow, June 15th 2011.

Firstly, Apple’s MacBook Air. There is a lot of talk about this and I think it is about time for an upgrade. Here is what I’d like to see in the 3rd generation MacBook Air:

- Higher resolution display
- larger SSD (512gb +)
- backlit keyboard
- upgraded processor (i3, i5)
- option to upgrade to 6GB or 8GB of RAM
- one or two Thunderbolt ports.

I don’t think all of this is a reasonable guess but it is all possible. You never know what to expect with Apple.

One thing to note about the MacBook Air that makes me think they will update before OS X Lion is, in all of Apple’s demo videos of OS X Lion they use not just any MacBook but the MacBook Air. I think the MacBook Air is one of Apple’s favourite computers and the way the future of Macintosh computing might be.

It is said to be exactly one year since the last time the Mac Mini was updated. My thoughts for the Mac Mini are quite similar. More RAM, Thunderbolt, better processor (i3 or i5) etc.

I can’t wait to see what Apple announces. I think tomorrow will be an Apple lover’s lucky day.

Explosion at Foxconn – Apple partner

It was around 6-7pm when there was an explosion at the the A5 Foxconn factory, a manufacturing plant opened in 1988 which includes 15 factories. This 3 square kilometer area is said to be “Foxconn City” or “iPod City” due to the fact that they are a partner of Apple and manufacture a lot of Apple parts and products. Foxconn makes consumer electronics for a number of different well-known companies. Acer, Apple, Amazon, Intel, Nintendo, and Sony, are just a few.

Two people confirmed dead while another 16 were injured in this battle against large explosions and black smoke. A Chinese company relayed that there were more then 10 fire engines, ambulances, and 10 police cars on seen.

In past news, this company has been known for having over 10 apparent suicides committed from it. One of which, a man jumped from a building to his death last year.

Foxconn has already struggled to meet demand for the hot-selling iPad 2 just a few weeks ago, what might have been the affect of the tsunami which was going on in the same continent at the time. The shortage experienced was of both labour and materials at it’s plant in Chengdu – the same location where today’s explosion occurred.

What problems will this create for us? Will there be a second shortage of Apple products?
